The difference between a democracy and an autocracy lies in the ultimate source of political power. In a democracy, the people hold the power, and in an autocracy all power is concentrated in one person who has absolute rule. Concerning democracies, there is a true or direct democracy where the people vote on all laws and rules and there are no rulers with any direct political power. There is also a representative democracy where the people vote on their rulers who then rule but are accountable to the people.
This is contrasted with an autocracy where the people have no political power, leaving a revolution as the only means of deposing the ruler. The economy, resources, industry, transportation, education and basically every aspect of life is controlled by the autocrat, and even if one doesn't exercise control over everything, the autocrat can a take control at any time.
