The autotransformer has only onewinding. Thus, less conductor is required for winding as compared tothe conventional transformer. Theprimary and secondary windings of the autotransformer are not electrically insulated whereas the windings of theconventional transformer are electrically insulated from each other.

Distinguish between autotransformer and two winding transformer:

  • A transformer that has a single winding out of which some part of the quilling done in the transformer acts as the primary coil while the other part acts as the secondary coil.
  • The winding is done on a single laminated core then such transformers are known as auto Transformers.
  • Transformers that have two windings, i.e there are two coils present on the laminated core for such that one side or one winding can be termed as primary.
  • While the other winding is termed as secondary then such types of transformer are general two wind transformer.
