A bar develops by the process of Longshore drift, which occurs due to waves meeting at the beach at an angle and backwashing perpendicular to the shore, moving sediment down the beach on a zigzag pattern.

A spit is a deposition landform found off coasts. At one end, spits connect to land and extend into the sea.
