Distinguish between plasma membrane and cell wall.

Hey freind, here is your answer .................

●PLASMA MEMBRANE
1). It is also known as cell membrane and is the outer covering of a cell.
2). It is ultrathin, elastic, living, selective-permeable membrane .
3). Plasma membrane having three layers are called lamellar structure.

WHEREAS

●CELL WALL
1). It is only present in plants and it is the external covering outside the plasma membrane.
2). It is semi -rigid,non-living, completely permeable, metabolicly inactive.

COMPOSITION-

●PLASMA MEMBRANE
1). Plasma membrane is basically composed of lipids, proteins along with amaal fractions of carbohydrates, polysaccharides.
2). 75% of plasma membrane constitute of phospholipid
3). Among three layers, two dark layers are made up of proteins and middle layer is made up of lipids(bi-layer).

WHEREAS

●CELL WALL
1). It is made up of cellulose.
2). It is in three layers-
i)Primary cell wall
ii) Secondary ce wall
iii)Middle lamella.

FUNCTIONS-

●PLASMA MEMBRANE
1). It maintains the individuality of a cell.
2). It provides a shape to the cell.
3). It provides selectivity.
4). It binds the cell organelles together within the cytoplasm.

WHEREAS

●CELL WALL
1). It maintains the shape of the cell.
2). It provides protection against injury.
3). It provides mechanical strength to support the plant.

Hope this answer helps u.....................................

=>Following are the differences between cell wall and cell membrane (plasma membrane).

1️⃣Cell wall occurs in plant cell where as plasma membrane is found in both plant and animal cells.

2️⃣Cell wall lies outside of the cell where as plasma membrane lies on the outside of an animal cell and inner cell wall in a plant cell.

3️⃣Cell wall is rigid where as plasma membrane is flexible .

4️⃣Cell wall is generally permeable but plasma membrane is selectively permeable.

5️⃣Cell wall is not living and quite thick in plant cells where as plasma membrane is living and quiet thin

6️⃣Cell wall's major function is to provide protection and strength to the cell where as the main function of plasma membrane is to hold cellular contents and control passage of materials in and out of the cell.
