In networking, a Cable Modem (CM) can be found at the subscriber's end whereas a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) is located at the cable operator end.

The data flow between a CM and CMTS is bi-directional in nature.

The route from a CM to a CMTS is also called as the upstream channel whereas the route from a CMTS to a CM is called as a Downstream channel.

A CMTS is a type of component that can exchange digital signal using cable modems over a cable network.
