the distinguish between rarefaction and compression is
the compression is a region is a longitudinal wave are closest together
and the rarefaction is a region and longitudinal wave where the particles further apart

Due to the vibration of the air molecules, the air molecules get compressed forming an area of high pressure and is known as compression.

Whereas, due to the vibration of the air molecules, the air molecules get apart forming an area of low pressure and is called as rarefaction.
