Direct democracy is a system where the people vote on policy initiatives directly. The earliest democracy practiced in Greece, the Athenian democracy is an example of direct democracy. Nowadays it is not mostly followed. The concern about it is that it will be a form of tyranny of the majority. For ex., if the majority feel and vote for slavery to be continued in a region or nation, then it will be continued as voted. Or if majority votes to deny women voting rights then the policy will be followed as voted.

Indirect democracy is also called representative democracy. In this case, people elect representatives who will vote on policies and make decisions about the government. The check on this system is that there is also the judiciary and a free press, which are expected to prevent or avoid the tyranny of the majority. Most countries like India, US, UK etc., follow this type of democracy. This form of democracy has evolved well over the years.

Switzerland is following a type of democracy that has some elements of direct democracy. It is followed at the levels of municipalities, cantons and federal state. The citizens vote on financial approvals of school building, or building a new street or labor laws, including constitutional changes.
