Distance is the actual path covered by the body during its motion whereas displacement in simple words is the shortest possible distance between the initial and the final position.
This can be understood from an example.
Suppose a body moves from point A to B and the back from B to A and the distance between A and B is 1m.
In this case the distance is 2m and the displacement is 0 since the initial position is the same as the final position.
