the total path travelled in a period of time is called distance . and. the shortest distance covered by an object is called displacement. hope this helps u

distance is the actual Length of the path travelled by a moving body. it is a scalar quantity. it is always positive. it can be greater than or equals to displacement

whereas if we talk about displacement it is the shortest lenth b/w initial and final point. it is the vector quantity. it can be +(ve) , -(ve) or even zero. it is smaller than or equals to distance
