Environmental determinism is the belief that the physical environment impacts human development. It believes that our physical environment shapes our culture and behavior. In other words, humans adapt to the environment around them.
Cultural ecology is the study of both environmental determinism and possibilism. It is the study of human adaptations to the environment. Specifically, it studies the way humans adapt to the environment with both biological AND cultural processes.
Possibilism is, in many ways, the opposite of environmental determinism. It is the theory that humans evolve by altering the environment to best serve their needs through the use of technology.
