Fundamental Quantities:
Fundamental quantities are the base units in a given measurement system. They can also be directly measured.
Examples:
1. Distance (meters)
2. Time (seconds)
3. Volume (liters)
4. Temperature (Kelvin)
Derived Quantities:
While fundamental quantities can be directly measured, derived ones must be calculated. They are calculated from the base unit. That;s the biggest difference.
Examples:
1. Kilogram:
Mass when measured in grams is a fundamental quantity. Kilograms are however 1000 grams. So kilograms is a derived unit.
2. Newton:
A newton is the net force required to accelerate 1 kilogram of matter 1 meter per second. So, newton is a derived quantity ( because kg is a derived quantity)
3. Watt:
Watt is calculated by dividing the joules per second. Since, joules is a derived quantity so watt is also a derived quantity.
