Iron (II) sulphate gives dirty green precipitates with ammonium hydroxide solution. This precipitates obtained are insoluble in excess. Iron (III) sulphate gives reddish brown precipitates with ammonium hydroxide solution. This precipitates obtained are insoluble in excess.

On initial addition of Ammonium Hydroxide the test tube containing Iron(II) will have a dirty green precipitate while the test tube containing Iron(III) Sulphate will have a reddish brown precipitate as Iron(II) has Fe^2+ ions while Iron(III) Sulphate has Fe^3+ ions which give its precipiatate colours to its respective compounds
