different between them is only of height .

Buttes were once part of flat, elevated areas of land known as mesas or plateaus. In fact, the only difference between a mesa and a butte is its size. Most geographers say a butte is taller than it is wide, while a mesa is a much larger, slightly less elevated feature.

That's an interesting question !

Here is your answer ;

Butte : It is a small isolated flat-topped hill with steep sides.

Mesa : It is a bigger landmass with steep sides and flat top like a table.

( Mesa is a Spanish word for 'Table' )

Plateau : It is an elevated upland with one or more steep sides spread over

a very large area.

Now moving on to the similarities and differences.

Similarities :

1. All of them have

(a) flat top surface

(b) steep slopes

2. Erosional activity is common in all Buttes, all Mesas and some Plateaus.

Differences :

1. Size : Butte < Mesa < Plateau

2. Way of Formation

Mesa : Once a plain land, continuous erosion of surrounding areas

makes it an elevated landmass and the top layer resists

denudation of underlying rocks, thus giving it its characteristic

shape.

Butte : Continued denudation by wind and water gradually reduces the

Mesa into small flat hills called Buttes.

Plateau : Formed due to numerous reasons like Tectonic activity,

Volcanic activity or Erosional activity.

Examples : Mitten Buttes in Arizona, USA

Grand Mesa in Colorado, USA

Deccan Plateau , India
