With negative reinforcement, you are increasing a behavior, whereas withpunishment, you are decreasing a behavior. The following are some examples of negative reinforcement: Bob does the dishes (behavior) in order to stop his mother's nagging (aversive stimulus).

Negative reinforcement takes place when a certain stimulus is taken off after a particular behavior is visible. The probability of the particular behavior occurring again in the future is more because of removal/avoidance of the negative consequence.
Punishment is an action intended to minimise undesirable behaviors. It is a process by which a result immediately follows a behavior which decreases the future frequency of that behavior.
Negative reinforcement should not be thought of as a punishment procedure as negative reinforcement increases a behavior whereas punishment helps in decreasing it.
