The distinguishment between Pangaea and Panthalassa is as follows -

  • The word Pangaea is a Greek word which means 'all earth' and the word Panthalassa is also a Greek word which means 'all water'.
  • According to the "scientific theory of continental drift" by Alfred Wegener, the continents present in the current time originated from a single supercontinent, which he named 'Urkontinent'. Later in 1920, he used the term Pangaea.
  • According to the "scientific theory of continental drift" by Alfred Wegener, the oceans present in the current time were formed from a superocean called Panthalassa. The Pangaea was surrounded by the Panthalassa.
  • The Pangaea was present 160 million years ago and it assembles around 335 million years ago. Around 175 million years ago, the break up of Pangaea started into smaller continents.
  • Panthalassa was around 70% of the earth's surface 250 million years ago. It was much bigger than the Pacific ocean.
