distinguish between permanent settlement and ryotwari system
Answers
The British government in India proposed three main system (the Permanent, the Ryotwari and the Mahalwari system) of revenue collection.
Zamindari system: this system was introduced by Lord Cornwallis in the year 1793. This system was launched in the regions of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. Under this system, a new class of Zamindars emerged, who were given the right to collect the revenue from the peasants, by the colonial government. Under this system, the rates of revenue fixed for five years.
The Ryotwari System: Thomas Munroe in the year 1820 introduced the Ryotwari system in the provinces of Madras, Bombay etc. Under this system, peasants directly paid the revenue to the government. There was no mediator between government and peasants. The rates of revenue were not fixed for a long period.
