Difference between plant and animal cell is -

  • Plant cells are green in colour while animal cells are not. The difference is due to presence of a pigment called chlorophyll.
  • The pigment chlorophyll is present only in plant cells, which contain chloroplast.
  • The pigment absorbs light to help in photosynthesis, the process where sunlight and carbon dioxide are converted into food.
  • Hence, plant cells contain chloroplast and it's constituent chlorophyll, both of which are absent in animal cell.

Differences between plant and animal cells on the basis of chloroplast:

Animal Cell:

  • Chloroplast is absent.
  • Hence, these cells do not have the ability to create or manufacture their own food/nutrients. Hence, animals depend on autotrophs for food.
  • Since chloroplast is absent, hence chlorophyll (pigment for photosynthesis) is also absent.

Plant Cell:

  • Chloroplast is present.
  • Hence, chlorophyll is also present.
  • Hence, a plant cell is able to perform photosynthesis in presence of carbon dioxide and sunlight resulting in production of glucose, oxygen and water.
