Primary and Secondary productivity:
Productivity is the amount of total production of new biomass in an ecosystem.
Productivity is classified broadly into two categories:
- Primary productivity – It is defined as the total production of new biomass by the autotrophs or mainly the plants and photosynthesizing bacteria.
- Secondary productivity – It is defined as the total biomass produced by the heterotrophs or the consumers of the ecosystem.
- Primary productivity is mainly synthesized from raw materials like water and carbon dioxide and ammonia or nitrogen salts.
- But, secondary productivity is mainly the metabolized product of primary productivity.
