Roasting is the heating of concentrated ore in excess of air while Calcination is the heating of ore in absence of air.
Roasting is used for sulphide ore as heating sulphide ores in presence of oxygen forms the metal oxide(the desired product)
Eg :
2ZnS + 3O2 ==> 2ZnO + 2SO2
