Distinguish between sodium atom and sodium ion?????

sodium atom has configuration 0f 2,8,1

sodium ion has 2,8. 1 electron is donated in it. no .of protons in both are same 11,but sodium ion has 1 less electron in it. ie. 10 there fore it exerts positive charge.sodium atom is neutral.
