Speed = Distance covered / Time taken. Let me illustrate it through an example -
If a car has covered 100 KM in 2 hours, then its speed = 100 KM / 2 hours = 50 KM per hour.
Now, if the car moves 50 KM in 2 hours and then 90 KM in 3 hours, then the average speed is calculated in the following way:
Speed in first case = 50 KM/2 hours = 25 KM per hour.
Speed in the second case = 90 KM/3 hours = 30 KM per hour.
So the average speed becomes (25+90)/2 = 57.5 KM per hour.
