Distinguish between speed and velocity:

We come across speed and velocity very often in physics and is sometimes  used as an interchangeable word.

The difference between the two are as follows:-

Speed:

  • When a certain distance is travelled in a unit quantity of time then, we get is the rate at which a certain object is moving in this is termed as speed.
  • Being a scalar unit it is always used when distance comes into play.

Velocity:

  • The total displacement that an object goes through with the quantity of time taken is unit, then the rate of cahnge of that displacement that we get is known as velocity.
  • Being a a vector unit It is involved with displacement.

Answer:-

Speed is the rate of  change of distance. It is a scalar quantity . It can never be negative or  zero. Speed never decreases with time . For a moving object it can never  be zero.

Velocity is the rate of change of displacement . It is a vector quantity . It can be negative, zero or positive  . Velocity can decrease with time . For a moving body , it can be zero.
