Friction is the force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers, and material elements sliding against each other. Static friction is the friction between two surfaces that are not in relative motion with each other, while Dynamic (aka Kinetic) friction is the friction between two surfaces that are in relative motion with respect to each other.

For example, consider a car that is about to start moving on a road; at that instant there is static friction between the tires and the road at the area where they meet. This force prevents the tire from slipping against the road as the tires start to rotate. Once the car starts moving, the friction force between the tires and the road (that continues to prevent the tires from slipping against the road) is now known as the dynamic friction force.
