Subsistence farming is mainly practised to meet the needs of the farmers family.in this type of farming the farmer I uses primitive methods to produce a variety of crops. He does not look into the suitability of soil for the cultivation of crops. The labour is provided by the members of the farmers family. All types of manures and a little chemical ferry losers are used.. The production is generally low.. Therefore the farmers are poor and standard of living is low

In commercial farming the crops grown and livestock are reared for sale I the market. Commercial farming can be intensive or extensive.. The farms are generally large in size and the investments are high.. The farmers try to keep the cost of production as low as possible.. Most of the work on the farm is done by machines. This type of farming is mostly practised in Prairies of north America
Pampas of south America and steppes in Eurasia. Commercial grain farming In the middle latitudes is essentially of this type
