A taxon can be defined as a group of animals under a taxonomic rank whereas category is the name given to the different taxonomic ranks.
Reptilia is an example for taxon.

A taxon can be defined as the group of organisms occupying a particular taxonomic rank. while a category is the name given to various taxonomic ranks. Therefore, a taxon is a group of organisms (living beings), but a category is only the rank or status of the taxon.
