neap tide- A tide in which thedifference between high and low tideis the least. Neap tides occur twice a month when the sun and moon are at right angles to the Earth. When this is the case, their total gravitational pull on the Earth's water is weakened because it comes from two different directions.

on full moon and new moon day when the earth ,sun and moon are in straight line . the sun and the moon exert a combined gravitational pull.thus , high tides are highest and low tides are lowest. this phenomena is called spring tide.
on half moon day.the sun and moon are right angle to earth.thus , gravitational pull of the sun and moon cancels each other . this results in very small rise or fall in sea water and is known as neap tide
