The two island groups of India are Andaman and Nicobar Island group and Lakshadweep island group. Both are also Union Territory of India. Earlier Lakshadweep islands were known as Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands.

Andman and Nicobar Island:-

  1. These islands are close to equator and have thick forest cover.
  2. They are bigger in size and more in number.
  3. There is a great diversity of flora and fauna.
  4. It is believed that these Islands are elevated portion of submarine mountains

Lakshadweep Island:-

  1. Lakshadweep Islands group is lying close to the Malabar Coast of Kerala. - This group is composed of small coral Islands.
  2. It covers small area of 32 sq. km.
  3. Kavarati is the capital of Lakshadweep.
