Traditional geography was more similar to modern surveying in terms of methods of data collection. It was also more of an art form. You'll recognize that write away if you look at some of the old school, hand drawn maps. It was primarily cartography based.

Modern geography only utilizes cartography as one aspect of their expertise. It is more focused on the distribution of features throughout the landscape, and it's relationship with humans. This means modern Geography draws from a myriad of sciences: Geology, Cartography, Sociology, Anthropology, Law (particularly Environmental), and Computer Sciences to name a few.
