Organisms that consist of only one cell and are fully capable of independent existence are known as unicellular organisms. Most unicellular organisms are prokaryotes (i.e, do not have a well-defined nucleus) Eg: Amoeba, Chlamydomonas, Paramoecium etc.

Organisms that consist of multiple cells are known as multicellular organisms. Most multicellular organisms are eukaryotes (i.e, have a well-defined nucleus). Eg: Humans, plants, animals.
