In general, plants are autotrophic or produce themselves organic compounds (proteins, sugars and fats) from simple inorganic compounds (carbon dioxide and water) using light energy through photosynthesis. Animals are heterotrophic - they need to live organic compounds need to download the finished form, because they can not produce them.
