Silver Nitrate test can be used to distinguish chlorobenzene and chlorocyclohexane.

Explanation:

  • As the compounds namely chlorobenzene and chlorocyclohexane gives different product on reaction with silver nitrate solution, it is used to distinguish the two compounds.
  • When 2% ethanolic silver nitrate solution is added to chlorobenzene and chlorocyclohexane, the former doesn't show any reaction whereas the latter forms a white precipitate with it.
  • It is because due to the difference in the hybridization of carbon chlorine bonds present in the compounds.
  • In case of  chlorocyclohexane , the C-Cl bond is of sp^3hybridization and facilitates nucleophilic reaction, whereas in chlorobenzene it is sp^2 hybridization and doesn't undergoes nucleophilic reaction.
