Saturated compounds,carbon atoms are linked with each other using single bond., they undergo complete combustion and so produces blue non sooty flame. Unsaturated compounds , carbon atoms linked with double or tripple covalent bonds,incomplete combustion and so produces sooty flame with yellow flame.

Saturated hydrocarbons single bond for eg while unsaturated hydrocarbons have double and triple bonds for eg ethene and ethyne
Saturated hydrocarbon gives clean flame and unsaturated gives yellowish and sooty flame
