These aren’t exactly polar opposites. A continental climate, in short, is any climate with significant amounts of both precipitation and seasonal temperature change (usually with 3 months with mean temperature under 32 degrees Fahrenheit). For example, both Detroit and Helsinki have continental climates, although their temperature profiles differ by up to 10–15 degrees in the summer.

A maritime climate refers to any climate whose precipitation and/or temperature profile is affected by the ocean (for example, Halifax, Nova Scotia, has very moderate winters for its latitude because of the proximity of the Gulf Stream prevents a quick freeze of the Atlantic). But Halifax’s climate is still continental.

This is different from an oceanic climate (Koppen Cfb), which is a type of temperate climate (without 3 months under 32 degrees) with uniform precipitation throughout the year. This type of climate is found throughout Britain and Western Europe, but also in higher elevations in the Appalachians of North America, where there is no maritime influence
