Plate tectonics  is the overlying theory presently used by most earth  scientist to describe motion within the outer most layer of the solid earth.Eventually where plates pull apart,slide by each other or collide,there is a tectonic activity manifested as earthquakes.The deepest plate boundary earthquake are at plate collision zones,and the shallowest are the divergent margins.Volcanism is therefore associated with the two plate i.e divergent and convergent margins.
