DEPARTMENT OF DRINKING WATER AND SANITATION

Who we are

The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation of Latehar Department is entrusted with the responsibility of creating drinking water facilities in the district for serving the citizens. This Department is also engaged in ensuring sanitation facilities in rural areas to improve the sanitation practices of rural and urban masses. It administers water and sanitation schemes in the district.

Central Government Schemes

Bharat Nirman/ ARWSP

Under Bharat Nirman/Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme, the Department has been providing drinking water facilities to villagers. Under this scheme, providing drinking water wells with the contribution from central and Jharkhand governments is part of it. These facilities are provided on priority basis in Annkabari centres and through piped water supply. This also comprised of rain water harvesting, ground water recharging, provision of Fluoride / Arsenic removal plant (wherever such problems were identified) and schemes for tackling water quality problem.

Total Sanitation campaign

This scheme is already under execution in Latehar district. Matching share is given by Jharkhand State for this scheme. The objectives are to bring about an improvement in the general quality of life in rural areas, accelerate sanitation coverage, and generate demand through awareness and health education, cover all schools and anganwadis in rural areas with sanitation facilities and promote hygiene behaviour among students and teachers, encourage cost effective and appropriate technology development and application and endeavour to reduce water and sanitation related diseases. The District Water and Sanitation Mission (DWSM) are implementing the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) services.

This scheme has following components.

Building of household toilets for people living below poverty line

Providing school toilets,

Provision of toilets in anganwadis

Creation of community sanitation complexes

Setting up of sanitary production centers/ rural sanitary marts

Awareness campaign using information, education and communication components.

It is a participatory and demand driven initiatives with the active participation of rural families and NGOs.

Rural Pipe Water Supply

Under this, rural pipe water supply scheme is undertaken to provide drinking water to the villages. This scheme provides for pipe water supply in specific water points to the villagers.

Rural Tube Wells Schemes

Under this scheme, government provides for ‘Construction of Five Tube wells per panchayat’. Through this, government is trying to ensure water supply for all the villages.
