These soil deposits are primarily being formed in the higher areas of the Peninsular Plateau. Laterite soil deposits are usually found in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh as well as the hilly regions of Orissa and Assam.

These deposits have an acidic characteristic due to leaching. The use of fertilizers and pesticides is necessary to make these soils productive for cultivation purpose.
