we have to divide 104 pencils among three children in the ratio of 1/2 : 1/3 : 1/4

Solution : it has given that ratio ; 1/2 : 1/3 : 1/4

⇒6/(2 × 6) : 4/(3 × 4) : 3/(4 × 3)

⇒6/12 : 4/12 : 3/12

⇒6 : 4 : 3

hence 104 pencils are distributed among three children in the ratio of 6 : 4 : 3

let the proportionality constant is k

so, first child gets = 6k pencils

2nd child gets = 4k pencils

and 3rd child gets = 3k pencils.

here, 6k + 4k + 3k = 104

⇒13k = 104

⇒k = 8

so, 1st child gets = 6 × 8 = 48 pencils

2nd child gets = 4 × 8 = 32 pencils

3rd child gets = 3 × 8 = 24 pencils.
