divide 40 into two parts such that 1/4 of one part is 3/8 of the other

let, the first part be x
and the second part be y
then ,
1/4 x = 3/8 y
x = 3/2 y ....... (1)

Now ,
x + y = 40

3/2 y + y = 40

........putting the value of x from equation 1

(3y + 2y ) / 2 = 40

5y = 40 × 2

y = 80 / 5

y = 16

Now from equation 1 .

x = 3/2 y
x = 3/2 × 16
x = 3 × 8
x = 24
