Hey Pretty Stranger!

Let the first part be x and second part be (40 - x)

From the given condition :

 \longrightarrow \sf \: x \times  \dfrac{1}{4}  =  \dfrac{3}{8} (40  - x)

 \longrightarrow \sf \: 2x = 3(40 - x)

 \longrightarrow \sf \: 2x =120 - 3x

 \longrightarrow \sf \: 2x  + 3x = 120

 \longrightarrow \sf \: 5x = 120

 \longrightarrow \sf \: x = \cancel \dfrac{120}{5}

 \longrightarrow \sf \: \large \boxed{ \sf \: x = 24}

\therefore First part is 24 and second part is (40 - 24) = 16.
