Define x:

Let one part be x

The other part is 40 - x

Solve x:

1/4 x = 3/8 (40 - x)

1/4 x = 15 - 3/8 x

1/4 x + 3/8 x = 15

5/8 x = 15

x = 15 ÷ 5/8

x = 24

Find the two parts:

One part = x = 24

The other part = 40 - x = 40 - 24 = 16

Answer: One part is 24 and the other part is 16

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Let one part be x

And the other part be 40-x

Equation:

1/4 x = 3/8 (40-x)

1/4 x = 3/8 (40) - 3/8 x

1/4 x = 15 - 3/8 x

1/4 x + 3/8 x = 15

5/8 x = 15

x = 15 / (5/8)

x = 15 (8/5)

x = 24
