let,

the first part is x

the second part is 40-x

A/C

1/x + 1/40-x=8/75

40-x+x/40x-x^2 = 8/75

40/40x-x^2 = 8/75

3000 = 320x-8x^2

8x^2-320x+3000 = 0

x^2-40x+375=0 ( divided by 8)

By solving this equation get ans

x= 15 Or 25...

So the two parts of 40 is 15 & 25

Answer: 15 and 25

Step-by-step explanation:

Let one part be x

x + second part = 45

Second part = 45-x

Recripocals:

First part = 1/x

Second part 1/(40-x)

1/x + 1/(40-x) = 8/75

(80-x)75 = 8(40x^2 - x^2)

8x^2 - 320x + 3000 = 0

Dividing by 8 throughout

x^2 - 40x + 375 = 0

x^2 - 25x -15x + 375 =0

x=15 or x=25

When x= 15

40-x = 25

When x=25

40-x = 15
