as the sum of two parts will be 40

therefore the second part will be 40-x or x-40

according to the question

1/4x=3/8(40-x)

x/4=3/8*40-3x/8

x/4=3*5-3x/8

x/4=15-3x/8

3x/8-x/4=15

3x*4-8x/32=15

12x-8x/32=15

4x/32=15

x/8=15

x=8*15

x=120

40-x=40-120=-80

therefore if u add these two the ans is 40
