"Let the first part be x and the second be y

1/3=y-40

y=1/3x+40

(1/3x +40) +x=400

1/3x+x=360

4/3x=360

x=360×3/4

x=270

y=1/3x+40=130

Let one part be x

∴ The other part is (184 – x)

One-third of x = (x/3)

One-seventh of other part

⇒ 7x = 3(240 – x)

⇒ 7x = 720 – 3x

⇒ 10x = 720

∴ x = 72

Hence the two parts 72 and 112.
