Divide 56 into 2 parts such that 3 times the forst part exceeds one third of the second by 48. Find the parts.


Solution :-

Let the 1st part be x

Let the second part be 56 - x

3 times the first part = 3x

1/3rd of the second part = (56 - x) × 1/3 = (56 - x)/3


According to the given condition,

3x - (56 - x)/3 = 48

Multiply both the sides by 3

➾ 9x - (56 - x) = 144

➾ 9x - 56 + x = 144

➾ 10x - 56 = 144

➾ 10x = 144 + 56

➾ 10x = 200

➾ x = 20


∴ 1st part ➾ x
