  • The Himalaya mountains are the highest mountain in the world .
  • It is a mountain range in Asia which seperates the plains of the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan plateau.
  • Following are the three parallel ranges of Himalayas:
  1. Greater Himalayas or Himadri
  2. Lesser Himalayas or Himachal
  3. Shivalik

Greater Himalayas

  • The northern most range is called Greater Himalayas or Himadri
  • It consists of highest peaks with an average elevation of 6100 metres above sea level
  • It is composed as snow and ice cover. Glaciers can also be found here.
  • The water from these rivers Himalayas is the source of perennial rivers.

Lesser Himalayas

  • The part of range which is found south of the Himadri is called as Lesser Himalayas or Himachal
  • The height of these mountain ranges from 3700 metres to 4500 metres
  • These ranges mostly contain compressed rocks and hence have rugged relief
  • The lesser Himalaya ranges include the famous valley of Kashmir and the Kangra and Kulu in Himachal Pradesh (the region which is quite famous for hill stations like Simla, Mussoorie , Nainital, Ranikhet etc. )
  • The Pirpanjal and Mahabharata ranges are the most important ranges of this region

Shivalik

  • Shivalik are the southern most ranges of the Himalayas
  • Their width ranges from 10km to 50km whereas the altitude varies between 900km and 1100m
  • Different names are given to these ranges in different regions
  1. In Jammu - Jammu hills
  2. In Arunachal Pradesh - Mishmi hills
  3. In Assam - Cachar hills
  • The valley lying between the lesser Himalayas and Shivalik ranges are called as Duns
  • Example : Dehradun , Kotlidun, Patlidun
