i ) 20 in the ratio 3 : 2

Sum of the ratio = 3 + 2 = 5

20 is diveded into 5 equal parts .

1 part = 20/5 = 4

Therefore ,

First part = 3 equal parts

= 3 × 4 = 12

Second part = 2 equal parts

= 2 × 4

= 8

ii ) 27 in the ratio 4 : 5

Let a : b = 4 : 5

Let a = 4x , b = 5x

But 4x + 5x = 27 ( GIVEN )

9x = 27

x = 27/9

x = 3

Therfore ,

a = 4x = 4 × 3 = 12 ,

b = 5x = 5 × 3 = 15.

iii ) 40 in the ratio 6 : 14

Let a : b = 6 : 14

Let a = 6x , b = 14x

But , 6x + 14x = 40 ( given )

20x = 40

x = 40/20 = 2

Therfore ,

a = 6x = 6 × 2 = 12

b = 14x = 14 × 2 = 28
