Two parts :    A   and  B.     (Let B be the smaller part).

Given   :    A  +  B = 20              ----- (1)
                 2 * B²  =  A²  -  16       ---- (2)

Now   from equation (1),   A = 20 - B.    Substitute it in equation (2).

              2 B² = (20 - B)² - 16
                      = 400 + B² - 40 B - 16
              B² + 40 B - 384 = 0

        discriminant = [ 40² + 4*384]  = 3136
              B =   [ - 40 + √3136 ] / 2
                 =  - 48   or   8             ... Ignore negative value

So A = 20 - B = 12
