To find the square root of 3.8

Make an estimate of the greatest perfect square number less than 3

So, Its 1

Subtract 1 from 3, multiplying by 100 & adding 80

i.e., 280

Now, the next estimate is 9

So, subtract (19)²–(10)² = 261 from 280

i.e., 19

Similarly, multiplying by 100, i.e. 1900

Now, the next estimate is 4

So, subtract (194)²–(190)² = 1536 from 1900

i.e.,364

Notice, if we would have chosen 5: then

(195)²–190²=1925>1900

Therefore,

 \sqrt{3.8} \approx2.94...
