Given : The given division work is, (-96) ÷ 16

To find : Answer to the given division work.

Solution :

We can simply solve this mathematical problem by using the following mathematical process. (our goal is to calculate the answer to the given division work)

Here, we have to follow one of the following rules for the sign convention.

  1. When both the dividend and divisor are +ve, the obtained quotient will be also +ve.
  2. When the dividend is +ve and the divisor is -ve, the obtained quotient will be -ve.
  3. When the dividend is -ve and the divisor is +ve, the obtained quotient will be -ve.
  4. When both the dividend and divisor are -ve, the obtained quotient will be also +ve.

In the given case,

  • Dividend is -ve (i.e. -96)
  • Divisor is +ve (i.e. 16)
  • According to the previously mentioned rule no. 3 the quotient will be -ve.
  • The value of the quotient will be obtained in normal division method. (only a negative sign will appear before the numerical value of quotient)

So,

= (-96) ÷ 16

= -6 [a negative quotient]

Hence, the answer is, -6
