The division of labor by different type of zooids in obelia are as follows:

  • Obelia shows three distinct forms in the case of colony formation, thus known as trimorphic.
  • Different zooids are "Polyps or hydranths (nutritive zooids); Gonangia or blastostyles (budding zooids); Medusae, (sexual zooids)."
  • Gastrozooids or trophozooid capture, ingest and digest food. Hydranths look similar to that of a hydra.
  • Gonangium forms by Gonotheca, blastostyle, and the gonophores
  • The gonads mature after the medusae escape from the gonotheca.
  • "Male and female gametes → zygote → planula larva → hydrula → colony → sexual medusae → gametes → zygote and so on."
